Mailbox Flag Is Up

The red plastic flag on our mailbox was up this morning, which is a signal for the mail carrier saying “take the mail out of here.” But it was Sunday, and we had no outgoing mail. Mystery – who did this? So I hiked down the hill and looked in our mailbox. In it was a crushed and empty plastic bottle of some brand of power water. So the flag meant “here’s my garbage, whoever you are, please throw it out?”

Better than littering, but still, I am baffled. I threw the bottle out (in a neighbor’s trash can, because I didn’t want to hike back UP the hill and around to the back to our OWN cans), but I wonder about the message here.

If a writer is someone on whom nothing is lost, what to do with this? Ruminate, so far.
